Heard the miracle stories about PEMF for chronic pain, sleep, fatigue, depression, arthritis, and fibromyalgia?

Our family tries PEMF for a month–Portland, Oregon

Friends in Portland, OR told me about the success of PEMF for chronic pain, better sleep, depression, arthritis, PTSD, fibromyalgia, Lyme, autoimmune disease, and more. We had to try it and set up with a trial through Dr. Elliott and Healthy Spaces.

My family is trialing the PEMF for one month and I’m chronicling our experiences here. I am 46 and have issues with poor sleep (hormones!), adrenal fatigue, hypothyroid symptoms (low T3), weight loss resistance, and lifelong lower back and knee pain.  I work as a writer in the field of functional medicine and love implementing and sharing health information to improve my life and the life of others.

My husband, 59, has an old brachial plexus and spinal cord injury that leaves him with constant and often severe pain in his left arm. I have a 12-year-old daughter struggling with an old ankle sprain and athletic-induced knee pain. My 10-year-old daughter has celiac disease and sometimes gets abdominal migraines. She also has some functional neurology/visual processing issues, so I am interested to see if the PEMF can help with that as well. But they are pretty healthy and bright for the most part. I was, however, wondering whether the PEMF could help them stop fighting.

How does PEMF work?

PEMF improves how cells function. The “brain” of each cell is the cell membrane, which provides a protective barrier and structure for each cell. The cell membrane communicates with other cells and determines what goes in and out through electrical charges. Chronic pain, fatigue, depression, disease and so on develop partly because this function becomes impaired and the cells do not function well. The PEMF helps restore the membrane’s electrical balance, in essence “charging the battery” of the cell. As a result, the cells generate more energy and the membranes work more efficiently at regulating cell metabolism. This results in increased oxygenation, enhanced circulation, increased hydration, better detoxification, and enhanced nutrient absorption.  This explains the various forms of symptom relief.

This is a super-simplified explanation of a very complex process. If you are a science geek, there are some great websites and books to help you. I am also just learning about it myself. In the meantime, try the links on the FAQ page.

How do I use PEMF?

This is the beauty. I’m a health nut and try all sorts of things to improve my health. Sometimes it seems incorporating all the health advice out there would be a full-time job. By the time you do your meditation, exercise, juicing, healthy meal planning and preparing, walking, healthy socializing, positive visualization, fermenting, veggie shopping and chopping, supplement ordering, class attending, earthing, spending time in nature, and so on, there is no time left to do real-world things like earn a living.

With the PEMF, you just lie on the mat for a few minutes two or more times a day. People use it anywhere from eight to 24 minutes per session. Or maybe you lie on the mat for eight minutes and then use the wand or pillow (which focus the intensity for specific areas of the body) for another eight minutes. Some people only do it twice a day, some four times a day. Some do it every day, some three times a week. Of course, the PEMF is not a free license to eat junk food and never exercise. You can boost your PEMF experience with basic diet and lifestyle practices.

Although tons of studies back up this technology, there are no hard and fast rules as to how specifically how you should use it, so experiment. And a stronger frequency does not always mean better results. It goes up to 400, but many people use the mat at about 100 during the day and 10 to 25 at night. Too much at night will energize you so you can’t sleep.

The go-to guide for using the PEMF is Dr. Joel Carmichael’s Magnetic Resonance Stimulation: Using the Field to Maximize Your Health. Priced at $81 and impossible to obtain online makes it difficult to enjoy. However, the book explains how to use the PEMF for various conditions, from acne to Alzheimer’s.
